When Londyn and Grey—a seasoned Sun Valley wedding planner—reached out about photographing a wedding at the Idaho Rocky Ranch, I didn’t even hesitate. We’ve worked together on multiple events over the years, and I knew this one would be something special. Set just north of Sun Valley, Idaho, the ranch offered the perfect backdrop for a multi-day celebration. Natalie and Byrd wanted more than just a wedding—they envisioned a full weekend experience for their guests. We kicked things off with a cozy rehearsal dinner in the ranch lodge, where the in-house chef served up a menu packed with local flavors. Friday’s welcome party leaned into the Western vibes—custom-branded cowboy hats, a wide-open bar, and panoramic views of the Sawtooth Mountains. The whole weekend had this laid-back, rustic energy that was pure Idaho magic.
Natalie and Byrd are the kind of couple that makes my job as a destination wedding photographer effortless. Down-to-earth, fun-loving, and fully focused on making sure their guests had the time of their lives. Natalie had a deep connection to the Idaho Rocky Ranch—it’s been in her family for years and was the backdrop to countless childhood memories. Byrd, who grew up on the East Coast, instantly fell for the rugged landscapes and open skies. Hosting their wedding here felt like the perfect blend of Natalie’s roots and their shared love for adventure. The ranch was theirs for the weekend, and guests fully embraced the mountain lifestyle—swimming in lakes and rivers, horseback riding, lounging at the cabins, and soaking in the heated pool fed by nearby hot springs.
The wedding day itself was peak Sun Valley wedding perfection. The ceremony took place in an open prairie, tucked beneath the foothills of the Sawtooth Mountains. Wild grasses swayed in the breeze, and soft floral arrangements framed the altar without taking away from the natural beauty surrounding us. Guests sipped wine during the ceremony (always a good move) and then wandered up to the upper ranch for an open-air cocktail hour and roaming dinner. No assigned seating, just clusters of tables and lounge spaces scattered across the open grassy area and under the cloth sail tent—creating this relaxed, festival-like vibe. It was the kind of setup that encouraged guests to mingle, eat, drink, and take in the epic views.
As an editorial wedding photographer, my job is all about capturing the energy of an event without taking over the day. Natalie and Byrd didn’t want a wedding that felt overly staged—they wanted the real moments, the quiet glances, the rowdy dance floor, and everything in between. My approach blended photojournalistic storytelling with just enough portraiture to highlight the fashion and style woven into the day. We carved out a few moments here and there for quick portraits, never pulling the couple away from the celebration for long. The most iconic moment? Climbing up to one of Natalie’s childhood spots—a bluff overlooking the valley—to catch the sunset. The Sawtooths lit up in deep golds and purples as Natalie and Byrd soaked it all in. Below us, their guests danced under twinkling lights, completely unaware the couple had snuck away for one last, quiet moment.
The night wrapped up with a wild dance floor inside the reception tent, drinks flowing, music blasting, and guests fully leaning into the mountain party vibes. It was everything Natalie and Byrd hoped for—an unforgettable Sun Valley wedding that perfectly mixed family history, wild landscapes, and one hell of a good time. And for me, it was a reminder of why I love what I do: capturing love stories that are as unique as the people living them.
